Summary:

Clear brush from work areas and escape routes, and cut saplings and other trees from direction of falls, using axes or chainsaws.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma preferred and 5 years related experience.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Control the direction of a tree's fall by scoring cutting lines with axes, sawing undercuts along scored lines with chainsaws, knocking slabs from cuts with single-bit axes, and driving wedges.

  • Select trees to be cut down, assessing factors such as site, terrain, and weather conditions before beginning work.

  • Stop saw engines, pull cutting bars from cuts, and run to safety as tree falls.

  • Appraise trees for certain characteristics, such as twist, rot, and heavy limb growth, and gauge amount and direction of lean, in order to determine how to control the direction of a tree's fall with the least damage.

  • Saw back-cuts, leaving sufficient sound wood to control direction of fall.

  • Measure felled trees and cut them into specified log lengths, using chain saws and axes.

  • Assess logs after cutting to ensure that the quality and length are correct.

  • Determine position, direction, and depth of cuts to be made, and placement of wedges or jacks.

Requirements:

Ability to perform physical activities that require full use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, running, stooping, and handling of materials. The ability to coordinate the movement of arms, legs, and torso together when the whole body is in motion; seeand hear well (either naturally or with correction), lift up to 80 pounds with frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds.

Safety Considerations:

Typically works 12 hours per day, 6-7 days per week in extreme hot and cold environments. Wears all required personal protective equipment on daily basis. May be exposed to poisonous snakes, insects and similar. May be required to work on variable terrain in performance of duties. May be required to operate motor vehicle. Routinely lifts/carries up to 50 pounds unassisted on daily basis.
